Week One – Three

Week One

The first week at my internship site, the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, was a learning experience. I quickly learned that almost everything in the job description will be hands-on. During the first few days, I went through extensive training led by my supervisors, Arya Aghdasi, the Volunteer Manager, and Margaret McCallister and Bill Taylor, the Volunteer Coordinators. Their names and positions can be seen above, along with my own name! Upon seeing my name listed on the “Staff” page on the Food Bank’s website, I immediately felt welcomed and appreciated by my co-workers. All of the training I received and continue to receive, will help me lead groups of volunteers at the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, as well as help me assist the non-profit organization’s mission to end hunger.

Week Two

Week two was an exciting week for me at the Food Bank. I had the opportunity to closely shadow Bill Taylor and Margaret McCallister, who are the volunteer coordinators. While shadowing, I observed how to manage volunteer groups and learn more about the daily opperations. After studying different daily opperations, I was given the chance to lead volunteer efforts for sort and salvage, and cleaning in compliance with United States Department of Agriculture regulations. I also had the chance to take three volunteers on a tour of the facility, while supervised by Bill Taylor. The tour went so well that I was allowed to give another tour the following day, while supervised by Margaret McCallister. This was such a fun experience! Having the opportunity to utilize my leadership skills made me feel valued as a trusted member of the staff at the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia.
